The story behind the Studio

Formation

Scryglass Studio was founded around three core purposes:

Build Melbourne’s first creative space custom-tailored for tabletop gamers.

Provide a venue for unforgettable roleplaying experiences, both for RPG fans and first-timers.

Lower the barrier of entry for local creatives to make tabletop gaming Actual Play content.

The Studio’s founder is Jackson Heenan, is a creative professional with 10+ years in the performing arts and tabletop game industries. His experience covers acting, theatre production, game retail, events, and streaming.

Tabletop RPGs are a wholly unique live entertainment medium. There’s something special about coming together with friends to tell a story that will never be exactly reproduced outside of that room.

The form of the studio was inspired by the black box theatres I’d studied and worked in – a neutral space that can be totally transformed with simple but effective sets, lighting, and sound design.

Adding cameras and microphones was an obvious next step to facilitate producing RPG actual plays like Critical Role and Dimension 20. I’d love to help bring Melbourne’s performers, writers, and designers to a wider audience.
